This 2,250-acre lake outside Hartsville — Lake Robinson, not to be confused with the smaller Greer lake of the same name — was built in 1960 by damming Black Creek to cool the H.B. Robinson power station, one of the oldest commercial nuclear plants in the country. Spanning the Darlington and Chesterfield county line, it has become one of the Pee Dee region’s most popular recreation lakes for fishing, boating, water skiing and swimming.
The plant’s warm-water discharge keeps the fishing lively year-round, and the cold months can be excellent. Anglers target largemouth bass, bluegill and chain pickerel over a lake that runs to about 40 feet at its deepest. A South Carolina license is required, and public ramps make access easy.
About 2,250 acres, on the Darlington and Chesterfield county line, with a maximum depth near 40 feet.
The lake cools the H.B. Robinson power plant, and the warm-water discharge keeps fish active even in winter.
