Lake Edwin Johnson is a 40-acre state fishing lake in Spartanburg County, tucked off SC 295 between Spartanburg and Pacolet. Like the rest of South Carolina’s state-lake system it is a fertilized, intensively managed water that fishes far above its modest size — a handy, low-key spot close to town.

A managed lake close to town

Edwin Johnson is part of the SCDNR state-lakes program, fertilized and stocked to produce strong fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, shellcracker (redear sunfish) and catfish. Its small size and easy access make it popular with bank anglers, kayakers and families, and it is an excellent place to take a child fishing without driving to one of the big reservoirs.

As a state lake, Edwin Johnson operates on a limited weekly schedule, so it is worth checking SCDNR’s current days and hours before you go. Fishing is by rod and reel, a South Carolina license is required for anglers 16 and older, and there is a boat ramp for small craft along with plenty of fishable shoreline.
