Lake Placid is the 13-acre centerpiece of Paris Mountain State Park, the green mountain retreat that rises right on the edge of Greenville. Built — like so many Upstate park lakes — by the Civilian Conservation Corps, it is ringed by hardwoods and laced with hiking and mountain-biking trails, making it one of the most popular day-trips in the city.
The lake has a seasonal swimming area and easy bank and pier fishing for bass, bream, crappie and catfish on a South Carolina license. It is paddling-only water — no private gas motors — so summer afternoons belong to swimmers and kayakers. With a campground, trails and a historic bathhouse, Paris Mountain makes a full outing minutes from downtown.

The lake was built in the 1930’s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The original dam was built in 1898 and the lake was then known as Reservoir #2. It was the source of drinking water for the City of Greenville South Carolina. Later the lake was drained and transitioned into a recreational lake. The city of Greenville then started getting drinking water from other sources which include Lake Keowee, North Saluda Reservoir, and Table Rock Reservoir.
With Lake Placid located in the the state park, visitors have many options for recreation around this lake. There are campsites, bank fishing, picnic areas, playgrounds, hiking trails, and a public swimming area. There is a little something for everyone here. So, if you ever find yourself in the Greenville South Carolina area, please visit this scenic moutain lake and park.

Swimming is the reason many families come to Lake Placid. The park runs a seasonal swimming area on the lake, and the handsome stone bathhouse above it — built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s — is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the Greenville park system. On a hot Upstate afternoon the shaded shoreline and cool mountain water make it a favorite escape just fifteen minutes from downtown Greenville.
Lake Placid sits at the heart of a trail network that has made Paris Mountain a destination for hikers and mountain bikers alike. The Lake Placid Trail loops the water for an easy stroll, while the Sulphur Springs and Brissy Ridge loops climb into the hardwoods for tougher miles and long views over Greenville. Mountain bikers ride the mountain on designated days, and paddlers share the lake with swimmers through the warm months.
Paris Mountain is one of South Carolina’s oldest state parks, opened in 1937 after the CCC dammed the mountain streams to create Lake Placid and several smaller reservoirs that once supplied Greenville’s drinking water. The stonework around the lake, the bathhouse and the picnic shelters all date from that era and give the park its timeless, hand-built character.
Paris Mountain State Park charges a small daily admission — free with a South Carolina State Parks annual pass — and is open year-round, with the swimming area operating seasonally. There is a campground, a rentable community building and plenty of picnic space, so Lake Placid makes an easy full day out without leaving Greenville County. A South Carolina license is required to fish.
